Don is board certified as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. He also holds a doctorate in clinical psychology with graduate certification in health psychology. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. He obtained a Master’s degree as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from Alverno College (Milwaukee, Wisconsin.)
Don believes that prudent medication use can be a helpful adjunct to a treatment plan that includes addressing factors like nutrition, substance use (e.g. alcohol; cannabis), movement and rest, and environmental factors. He also believes that psychotherapy is a crucial element of the treatment plan in facilitating adaptation, resilience, and recovery.
Proper deprescribing is as important as proper prescribing. Don’s treatment philosophy with regard to medication is using the minimal effective dose as part of a treatment plan and this includes coming off of the medication when it is no longer helpful or needed.
Don has also developed the Healthy Minds ADHD Clinic where he offers counseling designed to address the symptoms of ADHD for people interested in learning to better organize themselves; decrease procrastination and distraction; increase persistence and follow-through; enhance focus and attention, and better manage emotional distress.
Conservative medication management may be utilized as an adjunct to an integrative (e.g. nutrition, movement, therapy, sleep, etc.) treatment plan. Please note that this program is not suitable for clients who are primarily focused on using traditional medications (i.e. stimulants like Ritalin and Adderall) as the primary way to manage their symptoms.
Don works with individuals age 18 and above.
